Exactly why the Halo42 co-founder turned to mindfulness movement like yoga and sound baths and how he complements his practice
“It all starts with the breath and it ends with the breath,” Mark A. Turnipseed says, of his daily practice of mindfulness, which these days means a morning meditation followed by a yoga flow. The Halo42 co-founder has found that turning inward is the best benefit for both inner and outer beauty. “Love heals and it’s also anti-aging,” he shares.
For Turnipseed, this journey started at a pivotal moment in his life, when he was at a low point. “I was 29 and about to start my 30s but my body was falling apart,” the motivational speaker confides during an exclusive interview. “I was 230 pounds. I was pre-diabetic and hypertensive. My doctor told me I’d be on oxygen by the time I was 36.”
It was at that moment that Turnipseed knew he needed to lean in to something bigger — and more spiritual. “I knew about exercise, I knew about healthy eating, I knew about mindfulness… I had studied wellness in college,” he says. “I just had not been willing until my health crisis sort of forced me into it.”
That moment was a turning point. In addition to being in poor health, he was suicidally depressed and on a ton of medication that had his body out of whack. He knew he needed to make a change and it had to be big. “I knew fitness wasn’t the only thing that would make me feel whole,” Turnipseed admits. “I started searching for how to heal from the deepest parts of the inside out,” he says. The entrepreneur started doing Ironman competitions — he’s completed six — and when his body started to feel it, he turned to yoga. This year, he became a yoga instructor and launched the Calm Strength platform on Instagram. With this overall philosophy, Turnipseed has heightened his glow, too.
Team Halo42: What’s your preferred mind-body method? Is it meditation, or yoga, or breathwork, or doing a sound bath?
Mark Turnipseed: All of these are actually yoga! And the purpose of yoga is to get into mediation. The true study of yoga begins with the asana poses and leads in to breathwork before ending in meditation. I relish in the physical experience of my asana practice and use breathwork throughout it. I also use breathwork throughout the day, but rarely do I do long prolonged sessions. I use sound as a tool. It’s like a tuner and can be used before a practice to open it to set the tone, and it can be used throughout practice. It’s also highly effective at tuning into the energy within a person, and helping them engage in meditation, but yoga asana is my favorite approach to getting into meditation because I’m a physical sort of guy. Sound bowls can help bring me back to that meditative state. Music moves you. It’s emotional. It resonates deeply, connecting the vibration within all of us.
Team H42: How can anyone tap into this inner work to create outer change?
Turnipseed: Well, the biggest thing is it helps us to break out of the shell that may keep us stuck inside that human condition of worry, stress, concern or fear. What yoga — and mindfulness — does is it helps brings us back to the truth that no matter what is happening outside of us it's all going to be ok. It creates an inner dialogue that says you can do this. It boosts confidence and we can relax into faith and love and compassion. In my yoga class, there’s a real release that happens within that hour, and I can see my students feel and look calmer and that same philosophy is what the brand introduces in skincare.
Team H42: So since you’ve been teaching yoga, have you actually seen any of these students have real breakthroughs?
Turnipseed: This has been the greatest gift for me — and the greatest gift one can receive. Sharing our passion and recognizing that by doing so we have helped to ease or enhance another’s journey through this life is truly rewarding. A yoga teaching experience is like no other. Often, people come in with what I call “life face.” They’re weighed down, tense, heavy, sad, full of all sorts of things. You know they say we become our thoughts and we create our reality. No one looks their best when they are in fear. It doesn’t take much to wake them up, and sometimes a smile or a gentle greeting will do it… but yoga always will. The thing is that yoga guides someone from their breath to their heart, and if I can help them get into the practice and they arrive at their heart, they find love and with love there is no fear. When we practice yoga, we can relax, and their beauty becomes restored
Team H42: Wow! That’s incredible. Do you have any favorite yoga poses or any you’re currently trying to master?
Turnipseed: Yoga is a practice. I have struggled with every pose, and every day is different. I may have one mastered and then wake up with a completely new experience. Yoga is a journey, it’s never a destination. Yoga is a great place because no matter how great you become or perfect you seem from the exterior there is endless depth to continue to sharpen like a blade. Truly the asana or the shape is the tip of the iceberg. Come be in a shape with me and dive deeper with me and Ill show you how vast the universe within truly is. The hardest pose by far for me — and the rest of the planet — is savasana. More people give up on this pose than any other, and very few take it all the way. It takes the whole class to warm up to savasana, true stillness. It’s the hardest, but it’s also my favorite. True savasana is where the practitioner enters meditation. I’ve also just become open to handstands. I’ve been practicing for 10 years and have never been confident upside down. This is exciting and fun and brings a new thrill to my practice, but Savasana remains the reason for my practice and consistently the most rewarding pose.
Team H42: How do you incorporate Halo42 products into your daily routine?
Turnipseed: After my morning yoga flow, I’ll practice my deeper self affirmation work with Halo42 products. As I use my Soothing Cleanser and Nourishing Face & Body Oil, I’m always reminded to use mindfulness while doing daily tasks like brushing my teeth, washing my face and infusing my skin with nutritious moisture. Through mindful awareness, I replace negative thoughts with self-loving affirmations, shifting my perspective and allowing me to recognize hope, my inner beauty, and helping me to connect with my power and higher purpose. After that, bring on the day!
