HALO42 was born at the intersection of beauty, mental wellness, and the simple yet radical act of self-love. Co-founded by mental wellness advocate and author Mark A. Turnipseed and renowned makeup artist and former Armani Beauty executive Tim Quinn, HALO42 is more than a skincare brand. It is a movement toward wholeness.
For Tim, beauty had always been about more than makeup. After more than two decades helping shape the world of luxury beauty—and following his own courageous experience with cancer—he began searching for something deeper: an approach to beauty that did more than change how someone appeared, but also supported how they felt.
Mark’s journey was different, but no less transformative. After battling heroin addiction, depression, and years of profound disconnection from himself, entering the skincare and beauty world became an act of reclaiming joy. It represented the possibility of turning despair into beauty and transforming the rituals that once felt difficult into daily expressions of care.
At the heart of Mark’s story is a moment that appeared small from the outside but changed the direction of his life.
During one of the lowest periods of his addiction, a mental health counselor began teaching him mindfulness through the most ordinary of activities: brushing his teeth. Mark was encouraged to slow down, feel his feet against the floor, notice his breath, experience the movement of the toothbrush, and remain present as he looked into the mirror rather than immediately turning away.
That morning, Mark caught his own reflection and smiled and knew he could survive.
It was the first time he could remember looking at himself and feeling something other than shame. Nothing outside of him had changed in that moment. His circumstances were still difficult, and the road ahead remained uncertain. But something within his perspective had shifted. For the first time, he could see that hope and beauty had not disappeared. They were still there, waiting beneath the pain.
That shift in perspective is the HALO42 rainbow.
The Meaning Behind the Rainbow
Our name and philosophy are inspired by the Halo-Circumzenithal Arc, a rare atmospheric phenomenon often called the “upside-down rainbow.” Unlike the familiar rainbow associated with the passing of a storm, this radiant arc can appear in a clear sky, becoming visible only when the conditions—and our perspective—allow us to see it.
To us, it represents a simple but powerful truth: hope and beauty may already be present, even during the most difficult moments of our lives. Sometimes, we simply need to pause, become present, and look from a different angle.
Years after that first experience with mindfulness, Mark’s path crossed with Tim’s when Tim hired him as a wellness, fitness, and life coach. Through their work together, Mark introduced Tim to an integrated understanding of well-being—one that connected movement, mindfulness, nutrition, daily ritual, emotional health, and the ways we care for ourselves.
Their coaching relationship soon became a much larger conversation.
Throughout his career, Tim had witnessed the extraordinary power of beauty products to transform how people looked and felt. He had also recognized that something essential was often missing. The beauty industry had traditionally focused on external appearance, while wellness existed in a separate world of fitness, mindfulness, nutrition, and personal growth.
Tim and Mark began asking what might happen if those worlds were brought together.
What if skincare could become more than a cosmetic routine? What if it could serve as a daily invitation to slow down, return to the body, and reconnect with oneself? What if the time spent in front of the mirror could become not another moment of criticism, correction, or concealment, but an opportunity for presence and self-acceptance?
That conversation became HALO42.
The Story Behind HALO42
Together, Mark and Tim envisioned a product line that would unite Tim’s lifetime of beauty expertise with Mark’s lived experience of recovery, mindfulness, and wellness coaching. Their goal was not simply to create products that helped people care for their skin, but to create rituals that encouraged people to care for the whole self.
HALO42 was founded on the belief that every person carries hope, beauty, and the capacity for renewal within them, even when life makes those qualities difficult to recognize. Mindfulness helped save Mark’s life by teaching him to slow down, reconnect with himself, and discover possibility within the present moment. Tim saw that this same spirit of presence and self-connection could offer something meaningful that the beauty industry had long been missing.
Together, they created a brand intended to welcome every identity, inspire genuine self-acceptance, and help people feel good in their own skin—both literally and emotionally.
