From ingredient labels to scent and skin feel, use this guide to better understand what you’re buying.

Shopping for a clean body wash shouldn’t feel like work. But in reality, it often turns into a chore that involves unpacking ingredient lists, deciphering scent descriptions and guessing how your skin will react to the formula.

So, if you’re trying to make a more intentional choice, how do you become a more informed consumer? Read on to learn how to shop not just better, but smarter.

Start by Simplifying, Not Adding

Before you buy anything new, take stock of what you already have. Most of us are cycling through multiple half-used bottles without really knowing what’s working and what isn’t.

Paring down is often the most useful first step. Finish what you like, set aside what clearly doesn’t work and recycle anything you’re not using. (Pact and TerraCycle have drop-off and send-in programs for beauty empties.) A smaller rotation makes it easier to notice how your skin responds, and what you actually want from a body wash in the first place.

From there, the decision becomes less about trying everything and more about choosing well.

Know Before You Buy: What a Clean Body Wash Should Feel Like

Clean body wash does not always behave like traditional formulas, and that may require a learning curve.

The scent is often more natural and lingers a bit less. The lather may be lighter, especially in formulas that avoid sulfates (chemical surfactants). And instead of that “squeaky clean” finish, they may simply leave your skin feeling softer and more balanced.

Once you know that going in, it’s easier to evaluate whether something feels right rather than assuming it’s not working.

Know What “Clean” Actually Means

“Clean” is a useful concept, but it’s also an unregulated term, which means it can vary widely from one brand to another. There’s no universal standard behind it, so the responsibility often falls on the shopper to look a little closer.

A shorter, more focused ingredient list can be a good sign that each component is there for a reason, whether that’s cleansing, conditioning or supporting the overall texture and feel of the product.

It also helps to pay attention to how the product is described. Does the brand explain what the key ingredients do in plain language? Do they set expectations around scent, lather or skin feel?

Keep in mind that “clean” is not a one-size-fits-all description. A formula that works well for one person may not suit another, especially if you have sensitive skin or specific preferences. That’s why transparency matters more than the label itself. When a product is clear about its ingredients and realistic about its outcomes, it removes a lot of the guesswork and makes it easier to choose with confidence.

Why Ingredients (Like Copaiba) Matter

As you refine your choices, ingredients should start to matter more than marketing language.

One ingredient worth paying attention to is copaiba oil, which is often included in clean body wash formulas for both skin and sensory benefits. Traditionally used for its soothing properties, copaiba contains beta-caryophyllene, a naturally occurring compound that interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system and is associated with supporting a healthy inflammatory response.

But its appeal is not just skin-deep.

Copaiba oil has a warm, woody scent that many people find grounding. Some early research suggests that even inhaling its aroma may have measurable calming effects. A small randomized controlled study found that exposure to copaiba oil scent was associated with reduced anxiety indicators, subjectively and physiologically.

Other research on beta-caryophyllene, its primary compound, suggests it may play a role in reducing anxiety-like responses and supporting emotional balance, at least in early and animal-based studies.

The bottom line is that your body wash should do more for you than just cleanse your skin. Look for ingredients that can also help ease tension, boost your mood or help invigorate you when you’re having a hard time waking up.

How to Choose Without Overthinking It

The bottom line is: Look for products that are clear about what they are and how they’re meant to be used. Ingredient lists should be easy to find and understand. Key ingredients should be explained, not just listed.

And if your skin is sensitive, take a conservative approach. Start with simpler formulas (think: fewer ingredients and ones you’re familiar with) and avoid anything with a strong or unfamiliar scent profile since fragrance is a common allergen. When trying something new, test it on a small area first and give your skin time to respond.

How will you know when you’ve found the one? It could just be when you notice that you’re using what you have, instead of constantly searching for something better.
